Fetuses May Feel Their Mothers’ Depression

29/08/2012 04:51

As the fetus grows inside the womb, it is affected by everything the mother eats and drinks, medical experts say. This bond between mother and child goes beyond physical limitations, researchers from the University of California-Irvine believe, citing findings showing that the psychological status of the pregnant mother may affect the child in later years. The study focused on the mental well-being of mothers and how their children came to be. Because the growing fetus is collecting all the nutrients and information that it can get from the mother, the child may also develop the same mental problems that she was experiencing while she was carrying the child. Seeking treatment for depression earlier or before the pregnancy may help prevent neurological or mental problems in children, according to researchers.
